Value generator scales – HUMELD
The great french poët wrote : « it’s not the great ideas which moves crowds but the great emotions. »
In fact ideas could be the frame of emotions. The revolutionary formula :
« liberty, equality, fraternity » as contradictory as it could be, was a support of torbid feelings as utopia, jealousy, hatred, negation of personality, etc.
But how define emotions ? Or more precisely categories of feelings, which can move crowds as individuals ?
To know it, you must like a child ask the question : why ? until you have the answer : « I don’t know » or « it’s like this » or « because it’s what I want », or « I want this because I want it ».
A long lasting and painstacking survey could reduce the various kind of motivations which push people to act, to six primary scales.
I used for that, factorial analysis that i learned and practized during years when I was a student at INNETOP, (to day Institute of industrial psychology).
It is not the place, in this popularized talk to detail the method but anyone can understand the result of this reduction.
The individuals acts according to six scales, each one being an oriented vector, having a negative pole and a positive one - between the (+) and the (–)pole, we can have many hues like for example a neutral pole (o) (neither-nor), and intermediary values. A scale who admit only the two pole is said « dichotomic » and denotes a special, fanatic way of thinking. « Either black or white, you’re my friend or my enemy ! »
The first scale, the most primitive one is the hedonic one :
H (- ) : pain
H (+) : pleasure It’s a powerful source of energy.
A lots of individuals acts to attain ultimate enjoyment, they could even kill, to buy a nice villa in Cote d’Azur, a yatch, or nice girls.
They would kill too, to avoid negative pôle of H scale = suffering, torture, humiliation, death.
The utility scale U is generate by time projection of H. I accept to reduce my pleasure today, to increase my pleasure tomorrow U has two manifactors : time of projection (how long I will reduce my pleasure)
and reduction of pleasure indicator.
A lot of individuals think short range, they want all immediately and cannot wait too long to benefit of the results of pleasure reduction. Other are patient and can make painful efforts for long time range results.
The trend nowadays is to reduce the spare of pleasure reduction.
People cannot wait any more for future pleasures.
When some years ago, I explain some systemic concept my student told me « Ok it’s interesting, but what can I do with all these theory to improve next week my carrier ? »
Today things are changing, young students are more openn more curious – But maybe it is wishful thinking. However, think to the sucess of sustainable development.
The moral scale M implies a sacrifice of my pleasure to increase the comfort of people around me. Here too, space projection has two obsessions : the range of persons who benefits of my generosity (family, friends, citizens, the entire word) and the extent of the sacrifice.
The esthetic scale E measures the importance of harmony and beauty on the behavior of the individual. An italian is very moved by the splendor of monuments, a man born in Detroit would prefer perhaps a supermarket and is not sensitive to the ugliness of its environment.
When you analyse the roots of an esthetic masterpiece, like the greek statue in the Metropolitan Museum, you discover that its elements are part of a very precise and coherent sort of relations (the structure and the framework of the exhibited masterpiece).
Usually coherence and integration are the man factor that produces the beauty and harmony feelings.
The logic scale L, measures the coherence degree : of a behavior, or an event. When the boss claims that one’s must be generous, and acts like a snooze he is incoherence.
Lies ; double language, conducts to illogic, improvidable behavior and to a desintegration of .
The development scale D moves people who are all the time in search of progress of complexification of novation. They are creators, entrepreneurs and a major force for the world prosperity.
To acquire a large semantic space Culture Training Environment and personal gifts are necessary.
You cannot transform a moron into a genius, but you can change a barbarian into a civilized, cultural man.
Montessori method is a proof of the superiority of an adapted pedagogy or an academic bureaucraic, rigid pedagogy. (See the disappeared poets circle –a movie Le cercle des poètes disparus).
Hence it is necessary to have a large semantic space and to be trained to action (utilitarian and common sense, courage oriented behavior) and to humanism, (refined, sophisticated thought, strong highly structured mind).
It is why seminars are so imposant. Sustained development trend is a good thing, but we must think not only utilitarian development (energy, nature, medicine health) but too brain and mind development (sophisticated throught, culture of great masters and philosophers love for knowledge, openess and control of complexity.
The centralized/ decentralized dilemna
The roots of our present crisis must be found in the antagonism of the two categories of organization. In the centralized one, the power is concentrated on a small group of leaders or a single man : the boss.
The basis axiom is that the more you are near the ground, the more you are
stupid : you must simplify its tasks, and go towards mechanization and computer assisted thought and action
, dishonest : you must control every step, every panel of decision by computerized bureaucratic means.
and lazy : you must motivate them by positive and negative utility rewards.
The members of the leaving club, must travel, and communicate worldwide to insure control of these low grade workers. They cannot trust them. Therefore, with globalization and economy of scale dogma, we are dependant of instant communications, physical (planes development) and decisional (internet).
Like a baby cannot let be alone and needs a non stop control so the local directors and blue workers cannot be let alone more than few minutes.
It is why there is a strong interconnexion between realtime networks and centralization.
On the contrary in a decentralized system the leaders of the company trust the local directors and the department chiefs. They give them local power, and control them by exception (subsidiary principle).
Only with the organizational change of centralized to decentralized systems. We can struggle towards the awful increase of world complexity, and prevent the collapse of industrial and monetary system.
Unfortunately, those who could change the organization, are the same that benefit from a centralized type of power share. How to solve this dilemna ?
Only a crash of all the systems, and of the values, could clean the world.
In the same way, Hitler crash, open the way to democracy in the German people. But it is a tragic and expensive way of learning civilization. It’s better to avoid such an solution.
